What is Spotify Premium?
Spotify Premium is Spotify’s paid subscription. The advantages over Spotify Free are many. Consider, for example, listening to music and podcasts without annoying ad breaks, listening to music and podcasts without an internet connection and downloading music and podcasts. That way you can make maximum use of the streaming service.
Spotify Premium can again be divided into three different (sub) subscriptions and responds to the needs of different groups. Spotify Premium has the following categories: Individual, Family and Student.
What does Spotify Premium cost?
How expensive is Spotify Premium? That depends on the Spotify Premium category that you choose. First of all, Spotify Premium Family offers the possibility to link six different accounts for six family members who live at the same address to the Family subscription. This allows parents, among other things, to apply a filter for explicit music, so that young children cannot listen to this music. Spotify Premium Family is (logically) the most expensive subscription and costs £14.99 per month.
You also have Spotify Premium Individual, on which you can manage one account. This subscription costs £9.99 per month and is suitable for the single user.
Finally, Spotify Premium offers a student subscription: university students who meet the conditions of Spotify Premium receive a special discount (50%) for a maximum period of 4 years. A subscription costs £4.99 per month for them.
Moreover, Spotify Premium gives you the first three months as a gift, completely free! So you only have to pay a subscription fee from the fourth month. This applies to all subscription types of Spotify Premium.
How do you get Spotify Premium?
There are a number of ways to access (and listen to music) Spotify. You can listen to Spotify on the web, you can download Spotify on your desktop (Mac or Windows computer) and you can download Spotify on your smartphone. This is probably the most common way to listen to music via Spotify.
First of all, you open an account on spotify.com. Here you enter your personal and payment details. After that, there are different ways to listen to Spotify.
- Spotify Premium via the web player: this way you can use Spotify via your browser without having to download a program (this can be ideal if, for example, you are at work and are not allowed to or cannot download your own programs). How that works? You go to open.spotify.com and log in with your personal details. You can then use Spotify.
- Spotify Premium via a program on your Macbook or Windows desktop: go to spotify.com/en/download/ in your browser to download the program. Once the program is on your desktop, you log in and you can listen to music.
- Listen to Spotify via your smartphone: Go to your App Store, download the Spotify app for free, log in with your details and you are ready to go.

For example, Spotify selects music based on your choice of music that is an extension of the songs you already listen to (and you will probably like or like it). Spotify automatically creates playlists, such as Discover Weekly and Release Radar, based on the music you have previously listened to.
Furthermore, Spotify has the same keyword function as Google: based on your keywords (think of a certain period and your music genre) Spotify will find the corresponding music.
